Much Love and Some Art

It’s much love Monday, but I also worked on an illustration today that I actually kind of love!

I figured that since I’m a bodacious babe who hopes that she can get to the beach this summer even though it may not happen at all, I figured I’d draw a bodacious babe who also wants to go to the beach this summer but can fulfill her dream because she is fiction.

More art in 2020!

I really want this to manifest as my own Roarin’ Twenties, and the #1 way im doing it is DOING MY ART!

And I am honestly off to a great start, as I have honestly started and completed more art in this first week of 2020 than I have in all of 2019!

What I am working on this week is an illustration i started YEARS ago but am now determined to finish.

Untitledlogan square V2

This is an illustration of my second apartment in Chicago, in Logan Square.  I live here from 2014-2017, and i have very happy times here.   I loved this apartment so much, and I loved the people that came and went and life that happened inside.  I think of this apartment often, I think of becoming the person I am since moving here in 2012.

FINALLY GEEZ – Now lets talk about Ghosts

So like I said last time (two months ago! AH!) my printer was messed up but I finally fixed it WHICH MEANS…   <3 <3 <3 !COMICS! <3 <3 <3   Todays comic is brought to you by people who pretend to like you and then disappear: ghosting_title ghosting1 ghosting2

So my friends, here is a story.

One of the reasons I make comics and share them publicly, especially ones like this, is because I want someone else out there going through the same thing to realize you’re not alone.

This particular story was drawn about two months ago, after my casual relationship with Greg, but it also applies perfectly to my most recent dating experience.  Actually… probably more so, because Dave was the best person I ever dated and felt like relationship was just around the corner.  But then just a few days ago … poof! gone.  I think this one hurt the most. (BTW, Happy Birthday Dave!)*

Yes it sucks, yes you will sit at home and analyze over and over “what did i do?!?!”, “what did I say?!?!”, “what could i have done differently!!!”.  The answer is nothing.  And we all do this.  But ya know what?  IT’S NOT YOU.  Trust me.  When this happens remind yourself that it has nothing to do with you.  It is on them – mostly from lack of maturity and the inability to deal with conflict and confrontation.  Any of the other reasons do not matter.  (and both genders do this btw, not just dudes)

Also, if you have done this… please stop.  It’s a thousand times worse to not know than to know.

Ok well now that we’ve all turned on The Smiths and had a good cry about ourselves, go out and enjoy your life.

Love Ya’ll

– Rachel

*Don’t be mean to comic artists!

ALLLLLLRRRIIIIGHTY…

I basically took a month off to catch up on life and what not, SO, I am excited to announce two new projects coming up:

FIRST, a fun thing I have been doing all summer is sketching people I see around Chicago who look chic and are wearing interesting, creative fashion statements.  I just started a tumblr called Fashionable Chicago where I will be posting these drawings, and also allow people to submit their own drawings and pictures to the blog.  This project will be EXCLUSIVELY on Tumblr, so if you want to see updates, you will have to follow the blog!

NEXT – and most excitingly  (*^▽^*)

Today I officially begin work on a web comic that will be released to the public on OCTOBER 1, 2013

This comic will be based on my family history, each chapter will be about a different section of my family.  I am so excited about this project, partly because I am passionate about the story and work i am doing, and partly because I have already discovered some interesting facts and met wonderful people through research.

This first chapter will be about my mother’s-mother’s parents, who hail from an ole’ mining town in St. Austell, Cornwall, England.

st austell001 SInce I will be working hard and focusing on this particular project, you might not see many updates from me on here until the comic launches, so don’t be worried – Ill be back in a few months.

Love every one of you.

THE CHILDREN’S BOOK

I’m getting a lot of questions about the Children’s Book i was hired to illustrate, which is amazing – i am so thankful for the support guys!   So here’s a little update on my process so you can see what I’m working on.  I can’t post everything because it’s not my book to announce, but you’ll get the gist.  The story itself is about a boy and girl (and their trusted rubber ducky!) who travel the world in a bathtub and see all the great monuments on bodies of water.  The book is geographically accurate so kids can learn facts about the world and traveling, and is filled with songs and poetry.

Here’s a clip!!!:

I use Strathmore heavy weight bristol board and usually sketch out the drawing with a blue  Kimberly pencil, but this time used a regular No. 2.

Then I use my microns (prisma india ink) and draw the outlines of the smaller or thinner designs for a sleek and straight look

I used my brush pen on the trees and some of the water, and go back through with micron pens to fill out the details.  When it’s time for scanning, i pop it into photoshop and adjust the levels…

et voila!  FIN!

This project has been a lot of fun to work on, and I am incredibly grateful for the experience.

Even though the author hasn’t given me any specific deadlines, I am a little more behind than I would like to be because…

well let’s be honest – ya’ll know i’m a huge nerd…

i’ve been drawing pictures of myself as characters from awesome things that I love – FOR EXAMPLE – here’s one i’m working on of me as a Hogwarts student

hogwartz025

Yep – i AM that nerdy.

but more on that later…

Note: I’m No Longer Allowed to Watch Foreign Dramas

So I worked on another page for the Greatest Anthology… and yeah only one.. in the past month…

BUT ITS NOT MY FAULT – the lovely and talented April Malig got me hooked on this amazing and ridiculous Korean drama…. and it DESTROYED my life…

So now THAT’S over, i have time to actually do WORK!

(brought to you, as always, with super crappy photos!)

After weeks of doing… little to nothing (emphasis on the nothing) I finally had an event filled week, and boioboi, has it been fun

On Tuesday I and a few other cartoonists had the privilege to be in the audience for the final dress rehearsal of ANNIE , which was fun and fantastic, and was able to enter for free in exchange for sketches from the nights show:
